Hello,

It is possible for anyone in the US to purchase a ".de", German website, and then host that website on a US server? Specifically, I have a friend who has a ".de" extension of the same name as my company, and he has agreed to hand over control of the website to me. I'm not sure of the legality of this, or what process I need to undertake to make this work.

Thanks in advance

Hello Josh,

You definitely can transfer the .de domain to you. The German ccTLD is not restricted but there is an important condition you should be aware of. According to the FAQ of Denic (the German registry of the .de) you must appoint an administrative contact who is resident in Germany and who has a postal address (not a P.O.). Your can read more here: http://www.denic.de/en/faq-single/277/246.html?cHash=95fb1743d3.

I suggest you to contact your domain registrar to ask if they can help. If not I would recommend to contact an European registrar of .de.

Once you have transferred your domain name you will have no problems hosting your site wherever you like.

I hope this helps,
