.COM (and .NET) are so-called "thin Registries", which means the Registry does not hold the Whois details of the domains, but rather each Registrar has the obligation to provide a Whois service for the domains under its management.

You can start with http://internic.net/whois.html to find out which Registrar manages which domain, and hence which Whois database to check.
